The Pudding Is In The Proof

The Pudding…
Is In The Proof…

Don’t worry. You’re not losing your mind. Your brain expected… “The proof is in the pudding”, didn’t it. Rest easy sports fans, we meant, exactly what we wrote.

If you’re a business owner… especially the “One Person” business operation… it’s extremely important to make sure your marketing and advertising copy is going out correctly.

I see some heads shaking…

Before I start World War III… I know there a quite a few of you out there that have delved into the vast array of books and literature on this subject. There are quite a few marketing consultants that believe… a mistake or two in your copy shows a human side. We all make mistakes.

That holds true. After all, in our own tutorials and reports we stress the importance of giving your business, “your personality.” However, we also stress that your business personality should remain as professional as possible.

Therefore, the following is that point of view… from the other side.

You never get a second chance…
To make a first impression.

No matter what side of the coin you fall on… we can all agree… first impressions, are lasting impressions. We’ve searched through local newspapers, websites and internet spoof sites, and found quite an assortment of proof reading flobs, and flops.

Let’s look at some examples…

This is from a company marketing “learning software for children”. This is suppose to be educational. Just how qualified is this company, when it comes to educating your child… when they themselves aren’t quite sure how to use the word “their”.

Alas…. the dreaded “Homophone” rears it’s ugly head. They came awfully close to sliding down the “Grammar” ladder too. Some might think they should have opened with… “So Much Fun”… but “So Fun” can get by most.

Here’s another…

Now doesn’t that sound just yummy… and it’s homemade… and it only costs $14.00.

Too bad it’s only on the “Lunch Special” menu. This is real folks. We didn’t make this stuff up. Can you think of a better appetite killer than… Homemade Crap? Hopefully, for this business owner, the menu’s were changed on July 14th.

Last one…

“Thanks Mom & Dad. Whatta ya say… after the game we go invade Poland.”

We think we’ve driven this point home.

Proof reading is a must…

You spend countless hours, and numerous dollars, to cultivate and grow your business. It is in “your” best interest to be sure that anything representing your business, is presented as professionally, as possible.

The examples show just how bad it can get. There’s no argument that they didn’t get anyone’s attention. We know it got 100% of everyone’s attention. However, how many of those 100% now see your business as uneducated, or worse, too lazy to be sure they represent themselves professionally. If the answer is only one… then that’s one too many.

Would you trust your child’s education to a company that didn’t know to use “they’re”… instead of “their”. How about NO.

I can’t wait to get to that restaurant that serves “Homemade Crap”. I was in the mood from some “Homemade Crab”… but I think I’ll have the “Crap” instead. How about NO.

It would be the purest of irony if that home run hitting young man’s last name was… Goldberg… or Kowlwaski.

Why give your competition the ammunition that could potentially drive business away from you, rather than to attract it.

If you’re doing your own writing, then be sure to run it by a second set of eyes. Have them check for…

Spelling… Grammar… & Homonyms…

After they checked it…. you check it again. It’s not as time consuming as you think.

We’d rather you spend the extra time now… and avoid… full time regrets later.
